World Folktales
|
| This set gathers together a representative sampling of stories, jokes, personal narratives, morality tales, puns, and legends that have been culled from an international array of classic folktale collections. Editor Green employs the same regional format as in his Greenwood Library of American Folktales (2006). Volume 1 encompasses Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and Oceania, and subsequent volumes cover Asia, Europe, and North and South America. These continent-oriented groupings are broken down into smaller geographic areas, and then into national and cultural groups. For example, the subsection on the Middle East offers stories pulled from the folklore of Armenia, the Bedouins, Israel, the Kurds, Palestine (Islamic), Palestine (Jewish), Syria, and Turkey. The section on North America offers selections from 20 Native American tribes, two ethnic groups (African American and Cajun), and three regional areas: Appalachia, German Pennsylvania, and the Southwest. Every category is represented by at least 1 tale, and some include 10 or more. The selections retain authentic language and rhythms, and the judicious choices effectively address cultural norms. ?The Reason for Abstaining from Wine and Pork? comes from Morocco; ?Why Men and Tigers Are Enemies? is one of the selections from the Naga, in South Asia; and ?Why the People Tote Brer Rabbit?s Foot in Their Pocket? is an African American offering. Each selection is introduced by a five-point summary verifying its authenticity and identifying its originating core collection (a listing of the tradition bearer, source, date, original source, and national origin). A brief overview essay provides historic and cultural context. Each volume includes a glossary, a volume-specific bibliography of print and online resources, and a set index. A general bibliography is included in volume 4. The preface, volume-specific introductions, and literary commentary take an academic tone, but the stories themselves can be shared and enjoyed by a wide audience. In addition to large public libraries, folklorists, and storytellers, this set will be of interest to academic collections that support students in comparative literature, international studies, or teacher-preparation programs. |
